The early Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival action kicks off this weekend at Morphettville Racecourse with two Group 3 races for RN Irwin Stakes Day, including the Auraria Stakes 2015 for the fillies.
Three-year-old fillies heading towards the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) back at the track on May 2 get an early chance on Saturday to stake their claims with a top run in the $115,000 Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m).
Also known as the Schweppervescence Stakes, this year’s Auraria Stakes field drew a capacity 18 starters plus two emergencies.
There are only two spares left however after the first two emergencies Monopole and Alborbrown have been called upon to replace early scratchings #3 Sebrella (18) and #17 Exalted Honey (7).
A red hot favourite dominates the Auraria Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained interstate visitor Maastricht paying $3 for the win.
Joe Bowditch rides the consistent daughter of Mastercraftsman, the grey having run third in her three lead-up runs.
Two back was in Melbourne in Group 2 company over 2040m before her third last time out at Randwick in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m).
She’s performed over further than Saturday’s distance then and from gate five she’ll be hard to hold out.
The bookies have three other runners under $10 in the latest Auraria Stakes betting markets including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Ondina ($8) and Into The Mist ($6) who ran the quinealla in the Listed Laelia Stakes (1600m) at the track on March 28.
Waterhouse’s winner Ondina was having her first look at the track and did it in a front, bold-running effort with jockey Blake Spriggs taking her to the front confident in her ability.
She repaid him with her win from barrier 11 and will have it a little easier from gate eight with Spriggs on again here.
Second past the post in the Laelia, Tony McEvoy’s Redoute’s Choice filly Into The Mist was beaten just a neck in her third career start and first in stakes’ company, and occupies the second line of betting to improve on that this weekend.
In between Ondina and Into The Mist in Saturday’s markets at $7 for the win is then the market mover Kansas Sunflower with the rails run in barrier one for jockey Brad Rawiller.
Luke Oliver’s Caulfield visitor has won two of her past three starts, most recently over the Flemington mile on April 11 so is on the short back-up and racing over further than 1600m for the first time here.
Outside of the single figure hopes the only others under $20 for an upset are then the Greg Eurell-trained Haradasun filly Redasun ($11) shooting for her third win on the trot after back-to-back Sandown-Lakeside wins over a mile this autumn and Cathy’s Mark with a wide draw but a nice third in the Laelia last time out.
